A Gorgeous Exterior Transformation: Exploring Color Possibilities

One of the most exciting (and sometimes most challenging) parts of exterior design is choosing the right color palette. The same home can completely change its personality with just a shift in siding color or material, which is exactly what happened with this modern farmhouse. Our client loved two different color directions and couldn’t decide which way to go—so we created two full visualizations of the home. Then, to help make the decision, we shared both versions on our social media for people to vote on their favorite. Let’s take a closer look at how this house went from dated and disconnected to sleek, cohesive, and contemporary.

RENOVATIONS

Option 1: Mountain Road by Sherwin-Williams

The first version showcased Mountain Road by Sherwin-Williams, a warm greige with earthy undertones. This palette felt softer and more timeless, harmonizing beautifully with the white stone and surrounding greenery.

Instead of creating contrast, Mountain Road allowed the home to blend more seamlessly with its environment, offering a welcoming, grounded aesthetic. The white stone in this version played a supporting role, adding texture and brightness without overpowering the calm siding color.

And the Winner Is…

When we shared both designs on social media, the votes came pouring in. While both versions had strong supporters, the Blacktop option came out on top. Many people loved how the darker shade created a striking, high-end look while letting the stone and wood accents shine as focal points.

Why This Matters for Homeowners

This project highlights the impact of color psychology and contrast:

  • Dark shades like Darktop make a home feel bold, modern, and architectural.

  • Softer tones like Mountain Road lean timeless, cozy, and approachable.

  • Pairing both with lighter stone demonstrates how natural textures can balance and enhance different palettes in completely unique ways.

By visualizing both options, the client could not only see the transformation but also get real feedback, making the final decision much easier and more fun.

This renovation beautifully demonstrates how a fresh palette can completely redefine a home’s personality without altering its structure. By pairing thoughtful siding colors with timeless stone and natural wood accents, the design achieves both balance and character. Whether bold and modern or soft and inviting, the right color choice transforms not just the house, but the way it feels to come home.

Option 2: Deep River by Benjamin Moore

The second version featured Blacktop by Benjamin Moore, a soft black with subtle depth of green undertones that brings a modern, timeless edge. Paired with a sleek roof and natural wood accents, the house instantly felt refined, bold, and elevated.

The richness of Blacktop created a powerful contrast with the creamy stonework, which lightened the base of the design and kept it from feeling too dark. Together, this combination gave the home a polished balance of contemporary sophistication and natural warmth.
